Before 1450 AD, the area now known as Scottsdale was inhabited by the Hohokam, who are best known for building miles-long stretches of irrigation canals, some of which are still in use today. At thetime of European settlement in the area, Scottsdale was primarily a Pima village, with some Pima remaining in their original homes into the 20th century, as the city was built up around them. One of the first European settlers, in the 1880s, was Winfield Scott, a U.S Army chaplain who fell in love with the region. He and his brother purchased land and became the first inhabitants of what was then called Orangedale. The name was changed to Scottsdale in 1894, in memory of its founders. Scottsdale’s population boom began after World War II, with the opening of the Thunderbird II Airfield , and continues to this day, accommodating both industry and increased need for homes.
