Mesa, Arizona's long and varied history spans about 2000 years. The original Hohokam (or 'The Departed Ones') are best known for the miles-long canal system they constructed to create agricultural land in the desert. By the late 19th century, when the U.S. Army moved in to clear the way for settlement, the area was mostly the province of the Apache Nation. Mormons led the way next, forming small settlements that crossed the Northern edge of present day Mesa, but it was the group known as the First Mesa Company (and later the Second Mesa Company) that permanently settled in. A 1-square-mile townsite named Mesa City was established in 1878 and incorporated into a 300 person city in 1883, a city that blossomed over the decades with help from WPA funds, military bases and the aerospace industry.
