In 1885 Arizona State University (ASU) was a four-room school house, a "normal school" established to train the Arizona Territory’s teachers. At this time it accepted students still in high school, as well as graduates, and gave out teaching certificates and high school diplomas. Over the next decades the school began to redefine itself as a university, establishing several new college campuses and redirecting the focus of its programs. ASU’s 2014 charter further defines the university’s role in the future, as that of "a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but rather by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value," among other things. Today’s ASU is a research university, the largest public university by enrollment in the United States.
